Pima County Sheriff’s Office Gets State Grant to Fight Drunk Driving
The Pima County Sheriff’s Office recently received a $180,000 grant from the Arizona Office of Highway Safety. The money will be used to “crack down” on suspected cases of driving under the influence (DUI) in the county, according to officials.
How Will This Money Be Spent?
Some of the money is earmarked for programs that are already in place, according to a press release from the county sheriff’s office. These include increased DUI patrols and sobriety checkpoints, which are stationary points at which police pull over drivers to check their licenses and observe them for signs that might point to a violation of Arizona’s drunk driving or other laws. Patrols also focus on signs of possible drunk driving, but they are typically carried out from police cruisers, rather than at a single place.
The department also plans to spend some of the money to buy new portable breath testing equipment. The equipment is designed to give more accurate readings of blood alcohol concentration (BAC) for people under 21 years of age and who are not legally allowed to drink in Arizona or any other U.S. state. Education and prevention programs will also receive a share of the funds.
